HENRY TRUCKS — PAINTER : ancient myths meet modern landscapes
| 1995-2010
BY JEF7REY HILDNER
PUBLISHED BY THE ARCHITECT PAINTER PRESS, SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA

The Architect Painter presents not only a highly developed aesthetic language, which he applies to his buildings. Through his modern, asymmetric layering of lines and planes, positive figures and negative spaces, through devices of color, texture, or collage, he evokes the spirit of ancient myths, a symbolic dimension that also infuses his architecture.
Trucks blends signature concepts—including Control and Soul, Jigsaw Design, Negative Cubism, and Empty Space / Full Space (The Architect Painter outlines all nine concepts in his book Daedalus 9). He explores what he calls the "Visual Chess Game of Move & Meaning"—the basis for an architecture of Form & Story that he has so far most fully realized in his award-winning project, Dante | Telescope House.
This special 150-page large-format hardcover edition features high resolution images of paintings produced from full-size digital captures. Also featured: The Architect Painter's 2000 foundational essay "Significant Space."

The Internet Archive features in the viewer above the latest, 2017 edition of the book, reflecting final refinements made by the author in 2020 and as published in the original 12.75" x 10.75" interior format manufactured by Lulu.
But in 2020, Lulu discontinued manufacturing large-format books. So The Architect Painter Press turned to Blurb to manufacture the book in their slightly larger auto-adjusted format (nominal 13" x 11" / actual 12.625 x 10.875), which represents a very fine expression of the original book, and produce the book as well in hardcover with dust jacket:

JEF7REY HILDNER AND THE ARCHITECT PAINTER PRESS
AWARD-WINNING ARCHITECT, PAINTER, AND WRITER JEF7REY HILDNER launched The Architect Painter Press in 2005 under the banner, “Live Brave.” The Architect Painter Press presents Hildner’s buildings, paintings, and insights—work that reflects his focus on the visible and invisible architecture of art and life.
The Architect Painter Press also seeks to present the work of other artists and will soon take the first step toward that goal by publishing the paintings of Richard Rosa in the forthcoming book Field Games, for which Hildner wrote the Publisher's Foreword: "Book 9."
Author of eight books, including VISUAL EF9ECTS / Architecture and the Chess Game of Form & Story, Hildner has created esteemed artwork (buildings and paintings) and crafted celebrated essays that appear in a wide array of venues well beyond The Architect Painter Press—for example, Journal of Architectural Education, ANY, Oz, The Christian Science Journal, IMDb, Architectural Record, and Global Architecture Houses.
Hildner has also contributed significant essays to books by other authors. The book Architectural Formalism, by Hakan Anay, features a Turkish translation of Hildner’s essay “Formalism: Move | Meaning” (first published by ACSA then updated for Visual Ef9ects) alongside essays by distinguished theorists Rosalind Krauss, Peggy Deamer, Robert Slutzky, and Colin Rowe. The book Connective Tissues, by Peter Waldman, features Hildner's Epilogue, "Labyrinth R.U.N."
Among his honors, Hildner received an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture national award for excellence in teaching. His painting Labyrinth ii garnered an honorable mention in the annual juried show of the North River Arts Society, Marshfield, Massachusetts. His digital collage Ithaca (also featured in his book Henry Trucks — Painter) was displayed in the juried International "Art in Architecture" Exhibition, The Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, New Jersey. His project Dante | Telescope House won the New Jersey Chapter of The American Institute of Architects “Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Design.”
Hildner paints under the name Henry Trucks. He writes under the names Jeffrey Hildner, Madison Gray, Eliot Plum, and Michelangelo A. Roland Slate. Hildner’s one-word life theme—architecture—shapes his quest, his outlook, and his output, including his work as screenwriter and story architect. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Princeton University.
